So the show…well, I’m glad I went but I don’t think I would go out of my way to see him with his band again. I would go see him on his own. And then I would be completely satisfied that I had experienced Colin Hay live to the full extent. It is more a reflection of my personal taste than his talent. He has a nice voice and is a talented musician. He has a personable quality and a big fanbase. I just found that I loved hearing the songs I wanted to hear live and I wasn’t that into the songs I wasn’t into. So if I could’ve edited it down, it would’ve been perfect.
It was surreal watching him perform the Men at Work songs. It was cool to hear him perform live “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You” – the song from the Garden State soundtrack. At first, I thought it was too sappy of a song for me but I got into it after a few listens. So now, I’m totally converted. And I loved hearing “Beautiful World” and of course the last encore which was “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin.” I liked how near the end Colin Hay said, The show is over now but I’m 53. I’m not going to go offstage and stand there while you applaud and then run back onstage. Then he started performing his encores. It was cute to see his very pretty wife, his biggest fan, his one back up dancer and back up singer. I appreciated his new songs. He said, you gotta keep on writing. Good on him.
So I stayed till the very end because I was determined to hear Waiting for My Real Life to Begin live. He wanted us to stay till the end so he kept it for the end and it was a really great pay off. I hate to be one of those fans who wants to hear the one song they know and hate on the songs they don’t know, but it was the reason why I went to the show. And I did want to hear and see him perform other songs. I liked a couple of his new songs and I like those Men at Work songs more than I remembered.
Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
