Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights

I am so into this show right now. I had intended to watch the broadcast and even taped a couple of episodes but due to my full tv plate, I dropped it. Then during the season, I kept hearing from PCA’s who know my taste and whose tastes I know and respect how great Friday Night Lights was and how they never missed an episode. Still, I couldn’t find a good time to give it a try. Then this summer, I saw that the entire first season is available for free on nbc.com. So far I have watched the first 4 eps and I am totally enthralled. The writing is excellent and sublime. The acting is so natural and riveting. So, if you were like me and missed it the first time around, I highly recommend this show. I realize at this point that I will probably just break down and get the dvds which come out at the end of the month so I can catch up before season 2 gets underway.

House Season 3

In the meantime, my House Season 3 dvds just arrived today so I will start on those. I actually started watching in the middle of this season so I’ve seen a fair number of episodes. But I think I will just start at the top and go from there. It has been awhile since my House marathon but I’m sure I’ll get back in the groove. So, I heard about the break up of Jennifer Morrison and Jesse Spencer. I hope they can still work together as Cameron and Chase. I’m excited about Kal Penn joining the cast. I feel like he has a lot of potential that isn’t always tapped into in his roles. I guess we will see soon enough!

Superbad

Superbad soundtrack

So I saw the earliest show I could get to (it was the first showing at midnight – yes, on a school night no less) and let me tell you, I’ve been recovering from it since! But no regrets. So I was a little tired for the next couple of days. LOL. It was sold out and the crowd definitely enhanced the experience of it though I want to see it again to catch more lines since people were laughing the entire time. It was great – so cute and sweet and funny. It hearkens back to those John Cusack high school/cusp of college movies like Say Anything and The Sure Thing. Michael Cera has impeccable timing and teenage charm. Jonah Hill is also sweet and funny. And that kid who plays Fogel/McLovin is hilarious. I have to look up his name…Christopher Mintz-Plasse. I’m already a fan of Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared so I wasn’t surprised that Seth Rogen and his pal Evan Goldberg delivered on the script. The director, Greg Mottola, is from Undeclared and Arrested Development so I already have respect from his for that work. The whole move was really more substantial than you might expect. It was so high school in such an accurate, entertaining way. Great delivery on all points.

I have no right to complain

My life is good and it is ridiculous that I’m about to complain about this but I have to share this story. The other morning, I woke up and remembered hearing a news story about a new form of DVR that is coming out next year. What I remembered was that it won’t let you fast-forward through the ads and you have to watch your show by the end of the day. I was really tired at the point I heard this so I didn’t hear any other details. Then when I was more awake, I wanted to read up on it so I searched and searched but couldn’t find any articles about it. So then I thought maybe I had just had a bad dream. I honestly thought I might have been sleeping when my subconscious came up with this anxiety-provoking idea of a new dvr that did nothing I wanted it to. But I gave reality one more shot and I found an article in the New York Times about it.

So it is a true story and not a bad dream. Actually, now that I know more about it, it doesn’t sound so bad. It is a “free” alternative to dvrs. More people will have these functions accessible to them. That sounds very democratic actually. I’m fine as long as I can still have a choice in the matter. But it did make me realize my life is pretty good if something like this could constitute a bad dream. Also, now I’m almost on board. Speaking of ads, I have been converted to watching the ads during Mad Men on AMC, an amazing show, because of the clever trivia they have been putting on the bumpers to the ads. But I noticed it is only during the broadcast and not reruns. I guess they only count viewership during the original broadcasts and not repeat showings. Anyway, let’s revisit this dvr technology when it comes out next year.

Going Ga Ga

Spoon at Amazon

Music
I’ve been listening to Spoon’s new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I don’t have a favorite track yet. But I’m digging them as a whole.

Movies
Liked Bourne Ultimatum. I was impressed with how Paul Greengrass incorporated a Husbands and Wives-like camera approach and yet it was perfectly watchable without causing temporary blindness or seizures as handheld camera work and fast-paced editing sometimes does. Matt Damon did a good job. Stardust was cute enough. I knew we were going to get the fairytale ending so that was satisfying in a way. Thinking about seeing Hot Rod. Like Jackie Chan but not sure about Rush Hour 3. I’d see it if I were free and someone said, let’s just see it. Looking forward to Superbad. Michael Cera and Jonah Hill have been very entertaining on the talk show circuit. I like how they tell different anecdotes on each show rather than recycling the same stories over and over. Oh, I finished watching all of the Clark and Michael shorts starring Clark Duke and Michael Cera found, not suprisingly, at ClarkandMichael.com.

TV
As a direct result of my viewing of Clark and Michael, I started watching Greek on ABC Family to see Clark Duke in action. It is really cute and not at all what I thought it was going to be. I like the Freaks and Geeks vibe of it. The actors are likable and play their characters enjoyably. Plus, they’ve gotten a 10-episode deal beyond the summer so they will be around unlike Traveler which got axed. I’ve also been watching Top Chef Season 3. I’m not sure who I like to win yet. But it is fun tv. I’m also still into Psych and totally into Burn Notice. That show has all the elements of good summer tv.

Beethoven 5

Live music
Concert-wise, I would’ve liked to have seen Beastie Boys at Summerstage but I was unavailable. Oh well. I’m sure it was great. I’ve been to a few outdoor classical concerts – a lot of Beethoven. A fellow PCA and I were trying to figure what’s with all the Beethoven. I mean, he rocks, but what’s with this slew of all-Beethoven all the time this summer? We did some research and didn’t come up with anything meaningful. Anyway, I particularly enjoyed hearing the last movement of Symphony 5 in C minor although hearing the entire symphony was nice. Also, I learned something new: Beethoven wrote a triple concerto for violin, cello and piano. I just didn’t know.

One book
Oh, I read a fun book recently. Jennifer Weiner’s collection of short stories The Guy Not Taken. She is a good writer. I guess that’s all I got for now. Till Superbad!

D’oh nuts

movie donuts

Against my better judgment, I went back to the 7 Eleven to see if they were still set up as a Qwik-E-Mart (they weren’t) and to see if they had any movie donuts or Krusty-O’s. Yes on the former, no on the latter. They had been out of both the last time I went. So I had to get some donuts for me and my fellow Simpsons PCA. We enjoyed eating them but did have some regrets afterwards. The fun part was eating them while waiting to see The Simpsons Movie again! Afterwards, the sugary factor made us feel a little guilty and unsettled. D’oh, is right! Anyway, the movie was still enjoyable. Also, I caught a few more lines since there weren’t as many people in the audience (hence there was a lower noise level) as on opening night. For the record, another PCA bought a box of Krusty-O’s and reported that they were disgustingly sugary. I guess that is how I imagined them to be!
